Happy Thanksgiving!

To all our Canadian friends, Happy Thanksgiving!
I am very thankful for a lot of things, most importantly a loving mum and sisters, and lots of good food and a good home. There are lots of kitties out there that don't have that.

For Thanksgiving we hope you can send a few dollars to your local shelter. We support the MEOW Foundation here, as that's where I stayed before I found my mum.

My second Gotcha Day!

Today is my SECOND Gotcha Day!

Tuna and treats for EVERYBODY!

(and also, if you have a few green papers to spare, we'd love donations to be made to the MEOW Foundation, the shelter where I lived.)

Thanks MEOW!

We've been recommended on the MEOW Foundation's Facebook page! Thanks MEOW! :)

I was taken in by the MEOW Foundation in February of 2009, and I found my forever home with my mum and sisters in mid-March. And I think it is a fantastic place to be. I hope that all kitties can find their forever homes!

We know that this is a tight time for lots of families, but if you have a few dollars to spare, MEOW could use some help to take care of all the kitties that pass through their doors.

Less Adoptable Pets Week: Longtime MEOW Foundation Residents

Hi everyone!

We wanted to introduce some really lovely kitties who have been staying at the MEOW Foundation (that's where I was before mum adopted me) for a very very long time. All cats listed below can be found on their Cat-a-logue.

First, meet Beleu:

Beleu is black like me, and very very beautiful. She's a bit shy though, and thus she's been passed over, when she really ought to have a home. She was a former feral, and has done really well at getting used to people and becoming more friendly. She's not a snuggly lapcat just yet, but you know, neither was I when I was first adopted.

Now this mancatly fellow is Sunrizer:
He is a more senior fellow, being nearly as old as my sisters Pandora and Zowie, at 11 years old! Wow. He's a pretty cool dude, and he loves people. In fact, he loves people so much that he wants to be the King of the House and not share his people with any other cats. Mum met him when she was at the shelter to find me, and she says he was super nice and very friendly.

We hope that some nice adopters will see these fine kitties, and help them find their forever homes!

It's my Gotcha Day!

And we are having a party! We have lots of treats and goodies, and mum says we can have as many kitties and beans over as we want! This is the best Gotcha Day ever!

In honour of my Gotcha Day, we would love it if you sent a few dollars to the MEOW Foundation where I was sheltered and taken care of before I was adopted. They do really great work as a no-kill shelter for kitties here in Calgary, and we love them a lot.

MEOW Foundation: Silent Auction donations

The MEOW Foundation will be holding a silent auction on their website later this spring (click the poster for more info), and they are looking for donations for items! Here is a list of suggestions:

Popular items are but not limited to:
* electronics, weekend get-aways, restaurant gift cards, wine, store gift cards, massages, spa gift cards, beauty products, art, tickets to events or sport related items.
* Use your imagination, what businesses do you frequent often, business owners you know, businesses MEOW uses a lot, maybe a business does not have a product or service for an auction but they could buy a gift card to a store or restaurant.
*Remember - All donated items are legible for a tax receipt at fair market value.

This is a pretty local thing, but if anyone does want to donate something, please send us an email, and we will inquire with MEOW!

Thank you! :)

MEOW Foundation: Video cats!

Check it out! The MEOW Foundation has started putting up videos about some of their kitties. How awesome is that!

I can't remember if I met Hermano and Isha (the cats featured above) while I was at the shelter, but I think it's pretty cool that they have become best buddies. I hope this video helps them find a good home!

Also, I want to say Congratulations! to Aggie from The Adventures of SpacePaws, who found her forever home this week!

MEOW Foundation: Feral Power !!

The MEOW Foundation has this awesome new program! We just have to tell you about it, as we think it is so very cool!

They have waived the adoption fee for those awesome beans who adopt one of the foundation's shy cats! We think that is great, because there are so many lovely cats at the shelter (and in foster homes) that are super sweet, but because they are shy, they get less attention, and thus are not adopted as often. Our mum met some very sweet cats when she was looking to adopt.

If you are a bean in the Calgary area, please think about adopting.

If you are a bean (or can ask your bean) who can give a donation to the MEOW Foundation, please do. We'd like to help them out since they are waiving the adoption fee. (That fee goes towards helping fund spays/neuters and care for all the shelter kitties.)

Mum says that if we get any monies for Christmas, some of the monies will be going to this program. :) I want lots of kitties to get adopted so that they can have nice mums to give cheek and chin scritches like this:

5 months!

Mum told me that today I have been in my new home for five whole months!!

Wow, time sure flies. I love having a family, even if my two sisters sometimes treat me like the little brother they don't want to hang around with. (That's girls for you, eh?)

I've been a pretty lucky cat. The MEOW Foundation and their rescuer got me off the streets, got me to a vet so I could get my eyes fixed (I had entropion eyes), and put me in the shelter so I could find my mum!

Speaking of MEOW, I'd like to ask my readers if they can maybe go give a donation, as their shelter and foster homes are full up, and they aren't able to take in any more kitties. :( And if you live in Calgary, Canada, please go fill out an application form to be a foster home if you can! They need all the help they can get! (Mum would like to foster but our home isn't big enough for more kitties. Instead she's going to donate some money.)

The photo on today's entry is one of me looking out the front window. It was pretty exciting because there were some flying mousies (Mum: sparrows) hopping about on the lawn. I sure did wish I could get out there, but I could only watch from the window.

Adopting black cats

The local newspaper had an article the other day written by the folks at the MEOW Foundation. Mum said that we should post part of it as it has to do with black cats. (The full article can be read online here.)

Dear MEOW Foundation,
I'm thinking of getting a cat and wondering which cats MEOW has the most difficulty finding homes for.

--Graeme

Aside from shy cats and injured or sick animals, the cats who stay at the shelter longest are long-haired, male and black. These "three strikes" generally make it tough for some perfectly lovely cats to get adopted. For many people, the additional work required in grooming a long-haired cat is not appealing. Some also feel that long cat hair can aggravate allergies more than short hair, which may not in fact be the case. When it comes to black cats, MEOW rescues literally dozens of these every year. Believe it or not, superstitions about black cats abound and many people exercise an "anything but black cat" rule. These cats account for the largest percentage of the felines we work with and so are most in need of consideration by potential adopters.

If you know someone who is looking to adopt a cat, why not suggest a black cat? We're really very nice, if I do say so myself, and superstitions are silly things.

Zowie Tuesday & the MEOW Foundation's online silent auction

Zowie is enjoying her bed from the MEOW Foundation, and she wanted to tell all the kitties and mums and dads that there is some great fundraising stuff happening with MEOW right now.

There is an online silent auction for some great items, including special stuff for kitties, and lots for mums and dads. Our mum's favourite is all the great art that is up for bids!

If you can't bid, then perhaps consider making a donation, as this time of year is especially busy with all the wee kitten babies that are taken care of by the wonderful MEOW volunteers. The foundation has over 200 cats that they're taking care of right now, and they can use all the help they can get! :)

A little bit about the MEOW Foundation:
The MEOW Foundation is a no-kill humane society in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. They have a shelter that takes care of approximately 75 cats, and foster homes take care of many of the shy or sick cats that come into their care. Lots of volunteers help take care of the kitties at the shelter, and they do fundraising too. Their adoption coordinators work with potential adoptees (like my mum) and help them to find a kitty that fits their situation. (My mum's adoption coordinator knew that I would be a very good fit for my mum's home because I'm really laid back and I let the girl kitties be the boss. :)) The foundation's staff and volunteers do a lot of work to help stray and abandoned kitties and to get them safe homes. They make sure kitties are spayed or neutered, and they help teach people about responsible pet ownership. Plus I think that they are really super nice.

Honeysuckle!

Mum went to the Pet Expo today and she bought me some honeysuckle slices from the ladies at the MEOW booth. She also tells me that they are all really happy that I have found a good home. It sounds like a lot of them are very fond of me, and I remember getting lots of love in the shelter when I was there.

Hello to all the lovely MEOW volunteers! You're great!

(Mum also tells me that she bought each of us a MEOW bed. Pandora has already tried one out, and Mum thinks that they must smell like catnip or something because she was rolling all over it and chewing on it. And Zowie likes honeysuckle too, but she didn't spend as much time with her slice as I did with mine.)

I'm officially adopted!

Today the girl, or should I say, my new mum, got the final papers for my adoption. The MEOW Foundation does a 'Foster to Adopt' program where adopters get to foster their chosen cat for a month.

The picture on today's entry is the photo that MEOW took for their website. I have my eyes closed here because I had surgery on my eyes. The cubby-hole I'm in was my favourite spot at the shelter. It was a little too small for me so my arms and head always stuck out, but it was sure cosy.

My mum tells me that she might help MEOW by fostering a cat, but that she's going to wait for a few months until I get really well settled in, and Zowie and Pandora have stopped hissing at me.
