Pandora and Zowie are 13 years old today!
Mom adopted them when they were kittens and they were just barely six weeks old. You might have seen this photo of them before:

Well, that was taken only a few days after mom adopted them. They were sure tiny! (and they still are pretty small, as Pandora is only barely 7lbs!)

So, to celebrate this big occasion, we are having a party, with...

Lots of food!

And catnip!

And mom promises treats and toys and fun! :)
We also have an excellent Cat TV, with lots of squirrels and magpies to check out...

And if you're needing a snooze after all those nip-tinis, we have several excellent snoozing spots!

Brave and Mancatly

I will have to be very brave and mancatly today because I am going to the v-e-t to get my dental work done. Mum says they will have to pull my remaining upper canine. And this means travelling in the PTU, and being in an office that smells of other kittehs and doggehs.

ETA: 10 am - Percy was fussy in the car but very good once we got to the v-e-t's office. I'll hear more when he's finished his dental work.

1:46 pm - Just got a call from the v-e-t, and Percy is doing great! And, even better, he didn't have to lose any teeth! He just got a really good cleaning. Also, they tested his bloodwork and everything is very good.

5:20 pm - Home now from the v-e-t. All the vet techs and even our v-e-t were impressed with Percy's mancatliness! He's tucked himself under the bed as he's a bit weirded out, but I'm sure he'll come out for some food soon. Thanks for all the purrs! :) - Percy's mum

We had a visit today from the V-E-T.

This is me chilling out after our visit from the V-E-T. She came to give us our yearly checkup. Good news is, I'm a very mancatly cat, weighing in at 17lbs. And she says I don't need to worry about my weight. Not so good news is that I have to have dental work, and my top canine toof out. It is my last upper canine toof because the other one was pulled when I came to the shelter. I'm a bit sad about it, as then I won't be quite as fierce looking.

Pandora and Zowie did well too, though they might also have to get dental cleanings. The V-E-T recommended Hills t/d dry to use as treats to help all our teef get cleaner. Mum is hoping that will work so that she won't have to spend a lot of green papers on dental cleanings.

We also all got vaccinations - ouch! But we are healthy. Mum is going to arrange my toof pulling and cleaning with the V-E-T soon. She hopes it won't cost too many green papers.

Review: Taste of the Wild's new food

We received some samples of the new Taste of the Wild food, called Canyon River feline. It is only fish proteins with trout, salmon and sweet potatoes and is grain-free. It also has lower protein and fat than the Rocky Mountain Feline.

As we don't eat dry food, mum gave us some of this food as treats! And you know how we love treats. We sure do love these treats. (I think that Pandora would like to eat them all the time, but mum says she can't.)

This might be a good food to rotate into a regular diet if you are a kitteh that eats kibbles, or it would be good as treats if you are a kitteh that doesn't eat kibbles.

Now, we have a small contest for our readers, thanks to the folks at Taste of the Wild. Also, mum has been trying a few new varieties of Wellness food with us. We tried Salmon & Trout yesterday (not bad), and Chicken & Lobster today (pretty good). Pandora has a sensitivity to Chicken & Herring now so she is looking for other varieties to try.

Less Adoptable Pets Week: Longtime MEOW Foundation Residents

Hi everyone!

We wanted to introduce some really lovely kitties who have been staying at the MEOW Foundation (that's where I was before mum adopted me) for a very very long time. All cats listed below can be found on their Cat-a-logue.

First, meet Beleu:

Beleu is black like me, and very very beautiful. She's a bit shy though, and thus she's been passed over, when she really ought to have a home. She was a former feral, and has done really well at getting used to people and becoming more friendly. She's not a snuggly lapcat just yet, but you know, neither was I when I was first adopted.

Now this mancatly fellow is Sunrizer:
He is a more senior fellow, being nearly as old as my sisters Pandora and Zowie, at 11 years old! Wow. He's a pretty cool dude, and he loves people. In fact, he loves people so much that he wants to be the King of the House and not share his people with any other cats. Mum met him when she was at the shelter to find me, and she says he was super nice and very friendly.

We hope that some nice adopters will see these fine kitties, and help them find their forever homes!

Caturday: Becoming an even better mancat

Now, I am one of the most mancatly around, but mum says that lately I have become an even BETTER mancat. Do you want to know why that is?

Well, it's because for the last four evenings, I have come and snuggled on mum's LAP. There is a trick to this. Because I am such a large mancat, I only feel comfortable snuggling on mum's lap if she is stretched out on the sofa with her legs right out straight. That way she has a lot more lap, and I know that I can fit. Then she scratches my cheeks and my chin, and gives me little neck massages. That's when I purr and make biscuits.

Unfortunately you will have to imagine the snuggly-ness because mum has yet to get a photo! We only have ones of me being partially on her lap.

We are having a pretty good Caturday already! Mum got up at 7am to give us our stinky goodness. She says that it is hard to sleep in when there are three of us walking around on the bed. We were pretty nice this morning and didn't meow to wake her up, I thought.

Zowie is doing a bit better. Today she gets to start her metronidazole, but mum says she doesn't seem to have much diarrhea anymore. Thanks to everyone for all your purrs, prayers, and advice!

After the vet: update on Zowie

We are back from the vet. The good: Zowie doesn't have a fever, and she has good reflexes, and also has a very good yowl (which the vet found out when she had to get one of the techs to help take Zowie's temperature and stuff).

The not as good: Zowie will get to be on metronidazole for five days (2x day). We have asked for the liquid version because she hates pills, so she won't get to start it until the vet's office can get it in. Hopefully she won't mind the liquid version too much.

The also not as good: Zowie has lost some weight. When I last weighed her (April) she was 3.79kg. Right now according to the vet, she is 3.41kg. I am going to weigh her on my scale to double-check, but that still means she has lost almost .4kg (14oz/0.9lbs). That's quite a lot for a kitty as small as Zowie is.

Does anyone know of any good foods to help kitties gain (healthy) weight? They would have to be grain-free as Pandora would get them too. But we would really love some suggestions. :)

I was able to get Zowie an appointment at the v-e-t for tomorrow after work. I came home to find poop on the carpet, but I'm almost 100% certain that it wasn't Zowie, as she has always gone in the box. Also, Pandora's been acting crankier today, so it might be that the Wellness Chicken & Herring upset her tummy. (She almost always will poop outside the box if she has tummy upset.)

I also came home to a big grey hairball on the hardwood, and I'm wondering if that's why Zowie's been not feeling well. I didn't see any diarrhea in the boxes, so either Zowie hasn't gone yet today, or she did a regular visit.

Both Pandora and Zowie got pumpkin mixed in with their canned food this evening, so I'm hoping that'll help a bit.

I'll update you on the v-e-t appointment tomorrow evening. :) Thank you for all the purrs and prayers!

Zowie is not feeling well, her tummy has been very upset, and mum is going to get her an appointment at the v-e-t. Please send purrs! We are hoping that it is nothing serious.

(Zowie has been having diarrhea for the last few days and it is not letting up, so I am going to call the vet and get in for an appointment ASAP.)

What is Labour Day?

I don't know what it is, but I do know that it means mum is home on a Monday with us instead of being at work. We like that a LOT.

We have been (or rather, mum has been) looking for this toy for a long time. We got one in a Paw-it-Forward box last year, and it is one of our favourites! But we only have 1, and it tends to get lost very easily (especially under the stove).

As mum can't find these toys here (even in the Canadian PetSmart), she is wondering if one of our American pals could send us some. She said she would of course send green papers. (We would buy them online, but the shipping is pretty expensive for such a small toy.)

**Update: The Katnip Lounge has graciously offered to find us some toys! Hurrah! We can hardly wait!**

Review: The Refined Feline's Kitt-in-Box

We got to review this awesome desktop cat bed from AllPetFurniture.com! We do have one little oopsie though: Mum did not read the details very well (or measure her desks/tables) so we do not have any tables that have enough of a lip to hold the bed onto the edge. (It needs a 2" lip, and most of mum's tables are antiques and don't have that.)

So, until mum gets a new table (she's going to get a nice kitchen table that she'll set it up on, because us cats LOVE watching from up high in the kitchen), we have been using the bed as an extra spot on the floor. I will tell you right now that I have not had very much time in the bed! It is all Zowie's bed, nearly all of the time. She LOVES it. I am hoping that she will be sisterly and let me spend some time in it. (It is supposed to even be able to hold a very mancatly cat like me in it, as it can manage up to 20lbs.)

We really like this bed so far. We think it'll be even better once mum puts it onto her new kitchen table (and we will have photos when that happens!) If mum had a desk with her computer on it, she says she'd definitely use it there, to keep us cats off the keyboard.

We apologize for the lateness of our review! Mum didn't even unpack this awesome bed until after we moved! So we didn't get to try it out until just this past week.

Review: The "Skinneeez" cat toy!

We were sent a sample of a new cat toy on the market to test and review. They are called Skinneeez (that's two Ns and three Es), and are cat toys that don't have any cotton stuffing in them, just catnip. The packaging says it makes them more like real animals, though personally I wish that real animals did have a tasty catnip smell! Our toy was a squirrel. Now, I have seen bigger squirrels in my day, but for an indoor squirrel, perhaps small is best.

Pandora got first dibs on the toy because that's just the way we roll. (Well, and she sometimes will give the smacky-paw to anyone who gets in her way.) But we all got a chance at it. We like it! Zowie likes to carry it around in her mouth (but she wouldn't let mum get a photo! silly Zowie.) However, pretty soon afterwards, it ended up where all the best toys do: under the sofa.

Our verdict? We like this toy! We only wish that mum would move the sofa more often so that it wouldn't be missing as much!

Mum says this toy is available at all sorts of pet stores, so make sure your beans keep a lookout for one!

We have been gone a long time!

Mum and I didn't mean to be gone so long, but these last couple weeks have been super busy! But now we are all moved into our new apartment, and aside from a few boxes and some organizing, we are almost all unpacked.

There are lots of new smells to smell, and we have some new views. So far I have spotted a few birds and a squirrel. I sure would have liked to go after that squirrel, but mum said that we can't go outside. Darn.

We promise to get back to more posting this week. We have TWO product reviews for you!

Packing is hard work!

Remember this post? We are doing much the same thing these days. Tonight mum packed up 9 boxes of books (she likes to read a LOT), and she has had the doorbell ringing with folks picking up stuff via freecycle. Us cats have been snoopervising carefully.

Exciting News!

We have not been around much, and probably in the next couple weeks we may not be around much either.

It's because we're moving!! Mum has found a new apartment (it is cheaper, and closer to her work), and we move in just over 2 weeks! She says that she has a heck of a lot to do, and she might not have as much time to help us blog.

But, we cats are looking forward to some new digs. There will be new scents to sniff, new window views to check out, and hopefully no new introoder cats to invade our territory.

Pandora likes to be very lovey with mum, even if she can't climb right up on mum's shoulders. She likes to give kisses and hugs, and if mum is at home, she wants to be right next to (or on top of, or on the lap of) mum all the time.

P.S. Our V-E-T says that Pandora is the snuggliest cat she's ever met. When she was last here, Pandora even crawled onto her shoulders for a cuddle!

Pandora and I don't often co-exist in close quarters without having a spat, but this photo mum took the other week proves that every once in awhile, we can share. I think we were likely watching an introoder in our garden.

By the way, Zowie won the chair fight that we posted about on our last entry. Mum says I was too gentlemancatly and moved spots so Zowie could have the chair all to herself. (I odn't mind though, I went and sprawled on the sofa, where there was a lot more room!)

Zowie and I usually get along pretty well, but there are times when we have trouble sharing. I was just minding my own business, snoozing on the chair, when Zowie hopped up. I thought she wanted to share, but she wanted the chair all to herself.

Mancat Monday: Taking care of mum

Mum's been sick today, so we have been taking care of her. We all lay down for naps with her, and we keep her warm by snuggling.

Caturdays are for snoozing!
It was nice and sunny out today (instead of RAIN like it has been all week), so I took advantage of the very nice sunpuddles that were about.

I also tried to snuggle up close to Zowie, but she wasn't really wanting to share her spots with me. Oh well. I still got to sleep sorta close.

Pandora snuggled a lot with mum today. She likes it a lot (as we all do) when mum is home during the day and can spend lots of time with us.

Review: Bootsie's Bunk Bed & Playroom

We got this great toy from the folks at CSN, who run the AllPetFurniture.com website. In return, we said we'd do a review. So read on to see what we think of this cool toy.

As you can see, Pandora couldn't wait to try out the top of the bunkbed - even before mum got to put the cushion on top! The bed also came in this great box, and while mum was putting it together (she says it was really easy), we checked out the box.

I quite like the two dangly toys on the side - the one with the strings is my favourite. Mum isn't sure if she'll be able to get replacement toys once we wear these ones out, but she thinks that she won't have to worry about that for awhile.

Part of the great thing about this toy is that there is a hidey hole! And even a big mancat like me can fit into it, though as you'll see below, my tail sticks out. Oops. But it works really well for my sisters.

For Pandora and Zowie, the toy really lives up to its 'Bunk Bed' name. Zowie usually prefers the hidey hole in the lower bit, as you can see, but if there are sun puddles, she likes to sleep on top. (mum doesn't have any pictures of that yet, but she will soon.) Pandora always has to be on top though, as she doesn't like hiding in things. I haven't tried out the top yet, because it's too small for me to stretch out on.

We think this is a pretty cool toy! Mum is impressed by the quality. She says the panels are solid wood, and the toys look like they'll stand up to a fair bit of use. She also thinks the price was not too bad, as she hasn't seen anything similarly cool in the stores here.

It has been pretty rainy here recently (almost EVERY day), so right now I am enjoying the sun puddle. I hope it lasts!

Sorry we haven't posted much! Mum hasn't been feeling very well, and she has been very tired. But coming up this weekend we will have an awesome review of a new toy! And mum has taken lots of photos of us so there will be lots of new stuff to see. :)

Bismarck has made herself right at home in the spare room, though she does still cry a bit when she wants someone to come spend time with her. Mum spends time with her every day, several times a day. She will be with us until Monday, when her mum and dad come back from their weekend away. I have tried to be friendly but sometimes I hiss under the door because she doesn't smell like us. Mum gave us some treats on both sides of the door, so I am getting used to Bismarck's scent.... sort of.

Bismarck loves the snuggly MEOW bed that mum put in her room. Mum is thinking about letting her keep it. We don't mind because we have others to sleep in.

A visitor!

We will have a visitor for the long weekend coming up! Our cousin Bismarck is coming to visit us! We are not always very friendly with other kitties (Pandora especially) so she will stay in mum's spare room. Her mum and dad are going away for the long weekend, and as Bismarck has been ill, they wanted mum to babysit her so that she could be looked after.

We are very excited. Mum is preparing the spare room with one of those snuggly beds from MEOW, and with one of our smaller scratching posts, and she will find some toys too.

Just so you remember, here's a photo of Bismarck. Isn't she pretty?

Toes Tuesday

Check out Pandora's toes! She is sleeping on our sofa. It is really mum's sofa, but we sleep on it all the time and she doesn't get to sit on it as much because we are hogging it. (She is thinking that we need a sleeper sofa so that we can all stretch out together instead of her being squished at one end. LOL.)

Mum moved the sofa in front of the window so we can all share the lookout spots from the living room. Before, we only had the chair in front of the window and it was definitely not big enough for all of us to sit there at once! (We have not seen the introoder kitteh yet today, which is good.)

Zowie and I sometimes share the top of the scratching post, but we'll fight to see who gets to stay.

Pandora uses the post to watch out the window for introoders! We have a regular introoder from next door and Pandora doesn't like her very much. Mum says she is a very nice kitty, but that she would prefer that she stay in her own yard because it makes Pandora very cranky to have our territory invaded.

National Hairball Awareness Day!

Today is the National Hairball Awareness Day! (we think this is a USA thing, but us cats in Canada still get hairballs!) In our house, we use a FURminator brush, at least on me, because mum says I shed more than my sisters do. (Mum is pretty sure that Pandora hardly sheds at all, but I think she does!)

We got some great information from FURminator, and these are some helpful tips! We haven't tried all of them yet:

Regular Grooming: Decrease the amount of hair your cat ingests by using the FURminator deLuxe deShedding Tool, which reduces shedding by nearly 90 percent.

We use this every week!

Home Remedies: Add a little canned pumpkin to your cat’s meals once or twice a week. The fiber in the pumpkin can help move any hair clods through their system.

We have never tried this!

Stay Hydrated: Encourage your cat to drink plenty of water by placing various bowls throughout the house. The water will help flush out the hair before it has time to clump in the stomach.

We recommend using a water fountain type bowl if you have kitties (like me) who like to drink from running water. It's cheaper than keeping the tap dripping! :)

A New Menu: There are several specially formulated cat foods that aid in the fight against hairballs. Always consult with your vet first before making any drastic changes to your cat’s diet.

We do like our foods, but we have to be careful with Pandora's tummy. So we don't use any special hairball foods.

Ask Your Vet: If you believe your cat has a chronic hairball problems ask your veterinarian to recommend a laxative supplement to help prevent ingested hairs from forming hairballs.

We have a good vet, and she hasn't yet had to recommend anything.

Keep cats active to stay healthy; they’re athletes at heart. A healthy cat can jump as much as seven times its height and yet 21 percent of cats are considered obese or overweight by their veterinarians. Interactive toys with feathers on the end will encourage cats to leap, stretch and stay active. Keeping cats active will help them maintain a healthy skin and coat, as well as increase balance and coordination.

We play a LOT! My favourite toy is a string that I can chase after if mum (or Zowie) pulls it along. Pandora's favourite toy is her brown mousie. Zowie likes strings too, but she also has fun playing with the green felt ball.
